The origin of the Claddagh goes back to the 16th Century when Richard Joyce made the first ring for his wife in honor of her Love, Loyalty and Friendship. A tradition evolved if you wear the ring with the crown nearest the fingernail it indicates that your Heart is taken - if the heart points to the fingernail it means your Heart is Free.
